TRW Conekt Awarded DTI Project

BIRMINGHAM, UK - 2nd February 2005 - TRW Conekt, the engineering and consultancy business of TRW Limited, as part of a consortium led by a leading helicopter manufacturer, has won a Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) funded contract for a project to develop wireless intelligent sensing devices for monitoring the health condition of structures.

The development of wireless intelligent sensing devices arises from the need for robust, structural health monitoring and prognosis. This £1million project aims to create autonomous and self-powered, intelligent wireless micro sensors which provide an accurate health and life prediction of a structure, for example, a helicopter blade or automotive tyre, and send back a signal when it requires attention or maintenance.

Dr Alastair Buchanan, business and innovation development manager, TRW Conekt, commented: "The use of wireless intelligent sensing devices will result in a marked improvement in efficiency compared to the current method of streaming raw data back to a central monitoring unit."

The project will involve collaborations with, among others, a large UK company and university.
